Minimally Invasive Surgeries

GOA gynecologic oncologists utilize Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) whenever feasible. Advanced laparoscopic and robotic procedures assisted by MIS technology are characterized by:

  • Smaller incisions and reduced blood loss
  • Better visualization and increased dexterity
  • Overall, reduced recovery time and shortened hospital stays

GOA’s gynecologic oncologists are highly skilled in endoscopic MIS procedures. In total, GOA performs the most MIS procedures on the West Coast each year, totaling well over 1,000 procedures yearly.

Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeries

Laparoscopic surgery carries a range of benefits. Laparoscopic surgery limits the impact on the patient by utilizing video cameras and thinner instruments. The internal camera acts as the surgeon’s eyes. It offers many benefits, such as greatly reduced operation time and patient recovery time, as well as less internal and external scarring.

  • Reduced discomfort and pain
  • Reduced scarring
  • Quicker recovery

“da Vinci” Robot-assisted Surgery

GOA surgeons perform more robotic and advanced laparoscopic surgeries than any other group of gynecologic oncologists on the West Coast.

Robotic surgery was FDA approved for gynecologic surgery in 2005. Similar in principle to laparoscopic surgery, procedures conducted with the da Vinci™ Surgical System benefit from small incisions and internal cameras, greatly reducing the invasiveness of the surgery.

GOA surgeons were early adopters of this technology. Physicians operate robotic mechanical arms, which are equipped with highly-specialized instruments. Surgeries that utilize the da Vinci System benefit from small incisions—as small as one half inch—as well as the added dexterity and the precision of mechanically operated instruments. The procedures do require a greater number of abdominal incisions than laparoscopic procedures and more time to set up the equipment. GOA’s gynecologic oncologists determine the optimal MIS approval for each patient. GOA surgeons have performed more robotic surgeries than any group of Gynecologic Oncologists on the West Coast.

The excellence of the GOA Newport Beach/ Pomona gynecologic oncologists is also seen in their 33-year history of extensive clinical research. You need great doctors to safely treat and develop treatment protocols for new drugs and other new treatments. When unknown unexpected side effects occur, a very strong clinical team is required to deal with these unique situations. GOA Newport Beach/ Pomona has that level of expertise to safely explore new regions of medicine. Over the next several years we expect to expand our research activities to all GOA centers.

Ultra radical surgery

GOA gynecologic oncologists are experts in doing the most radical pelvic cancer surgeries. They have published articles on patients with ‘inoperable’ cancers that they have successfully removed surgically and cured the patients or achieved very prolonged remission. Every patient with gynecologic cancers should initially be seen by a gynecologic oncologist to determine whether their cancer can be resected and to make decisions regarding other treatment plans.
